"The main goals of our elementary school garden are to educate students on living healthy and growing organic food; teach them to respect and care for the Earth and each other; provide students with a hands-on way to learn lessons that complement curriculum and beyond; and be a model for families that may want to explore growing their own produce."
~Carolyn Herrmann
The P.L.A.N.T Garden is tended to 100% by volunteers!
All tools, equipment and gardening supplies are provided by donations or purchased with personal monetary donations or grants received, including yearly PTO support.
Besides planting, weeding, watering and wood chipping,
volunteers have:
-built and installed a garden shed for storage
-fenced in the garden to protect plants from animals
-installed a chalkboard and protective cover in classroom area
-built a large movable root view box
-installed a dirt, sand and water bed for the kids to explore/play in
-added a trellis to the main entrance to the garden
-installed two large entryway signs with the new logo created by Dicken parent Mandi Wise
-installed quote signs inside the garden and rules signs outside the garden by the gates
-installed a cultural crops bed (crops with origins around the world that have labels describing their history)
-installed the Little Free Library and a "no mow" grassy reading area of several native grasses
In 2015, the garden received:
$2000 from Whole Kids Foundation
$1000 from Ann Arbor Farm & Garden
